I’ve been struggling a lot lately, so I made this comic to motivate myself. I hope it helps anyone else who’s in a bit of a slump like myself.
Protesters burn the American flag in honor of Mike Brown and VonDerrit Myers.
Congratulations on doing something so severe and disrespectful that thousands of people across this country are now questioning their support for you.
Respect for the flag is one of the very few things that you’ll see polarized groups agree upon (see: Democrats and Republicans). If people who hate each other agree that what you’ve done has crossed the line, you need to step back and rethink what the fuck you’re doing.
The flag stands for freedom. By burning it, you are telling people that you do not care to fight for that freedom. We literally have an entire section of Code just on our flag, and you’ve spat on that. If you cannot show respect for something that represents so much of what you are fighting for, how can you prove that what you’re fighting for is even worth the effort?
Ughhh, is there a way to gain pleasure from the sight of people weeping and placing more importance over a scrap of mass-produced fabric than the literal systematic and state-sanctioned murder and ruination of black lives? It’s almost like allies are allies until you don’t align with them anymore. It’s almost comparable to when lgbtq “allies” get angry bc homosexual folk aren’t there to please em anymore. Just like you have folks that go “omg we let u be gag and this is how you repay us?”, we now have “omg we let you have the simple privilege of being ALIVE and this is how repay us??” Like, I’m actually starting to gain a strange pleasure over seeing people place literal faith in a polyester, mass-produced object that represents the country in which a black person is killed every 28 minutes on the dot, rather than they do about the actual people that are killed, and the government that had done nothing in the way of compensation for the countless murders, and literally has to be FORCED to take any kind of action to bring justice…
If it’s perfectly alright to burn a flag because it’s “a scrap of mass-produced fabric” then why was there such an uproar when Mike Brown’s memorial was burned? That was just a collection of paper, fabric, and other miscellaneous materials. It shouldn’t have held any form of significance by your logic. It should not have gotten any coverage by your logic.
Oh, but that’s right. I forgot. Symbols only have significant meaning in a protest if they represent the protesters. The burning of Mike Brown’s memorial gave the protesters more fuel for their anger. However, they’re perfectly in the right when they burn a symbol that is of high significance for millions of people who aren’t even involved with Ferguson right now AND for dozens of people that are currently walking hand-in-hand with them in the streets because those people have also been harmed by these events. While they’re at it, why don’t they just throw a few Bibles, Torahs, and Qurans into the fire?
I mean, who cares that a person who has been wronged doesn’t have carte blanche to do wrong?! Who cares that being wronged doesn’t mean a person is free from the consequences of their own actions?!

So many people need to stop wasting their time being bitter and talking badly about other people and just go enjoy their own life.
